Breath Control with Humming
Practice sustained humming on a comfortable pitch while maintaining steady airflow. This builds breath support essential for long phrases and projecting your voice.
Instructions
- Stand or sit with relaxed, upright posture.
- Take a slow, deep breath through your nose for 4 counts.
- Close your lips gently and hum on a comfortable pitch.
- Sustain the hum for as long as your breath allows — aim for 10 seconds.
- Release, breathe naturally, and repeat 5 times.
- On each repetition, try to make the hum steady and even.
Repetitions: 5 hums, 3 sets
Common Mistakes
- Humming too loudly — it should be a gentle, resonant vibration
- Running out of breath quickly — focus on slow, controlled exhalation
- Tensing the throat or shoulders
Variations
- Hum at different pitches: low, medium, high
- Try humming while gently massaging your throat area
Never strain your voice. If humming causes any discomfort, stop and breathe normally.
